Computerized Judaica Tools and Data Bases

A panel sponsored by the Association of Jewish Libraries, moderated by Edith Lubetski of the Hedi Steinberg Library, Stern College, Yeshiva University, will be presented at The Twelfth World Congress of Jewish Studies, July 29 - August 5th, 1997, in Jerusalem.

Presentations will include:

1. The Computer and Judaica Bibliographic Tools (3/4 hour including questions, with demonstrations,) Elhanan Adler, Israel Inter-University Library Network;

2. Remote Access to the Cambridge Genizah Collections: Facsimiles and Subject-Based Data (1/2 hour,) Ellis Weinberger, Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, Cambridge University Library.

3. Jewish Learning and Electronic Media, Compatible or Not? (3/4 hour with demonstrations,) Yaakov Rosenes, Judaica Archival Project.


Educational TV Wins Two Prizes in New York Festival

Two original films produced by the Israeli Educational TV network have won silver medals in the prestigious New York International Festival for TV programs. One was a historical documentary, directed by Zoltan Terner, on the destruction of the Romanian Jewish population, in the Holocaust. In the category of comedy and satire, the program called "Love of Truth," with a script by the humorist Ephraim Kishon, was awarded a silver medal. It is the 39th annual festival of its kind, and dozens of films were submitted from around the world.


Israeli Documentary Films to be Screened in Florida

Five Israeli documentary films will be screened in April at the Bass Museum in Miami; they were produced with the help of subsidies from the New Fund for Israeli Cinema and TV. They include a war film, "Beit She'an" by Doron Tzabari and Rino Tzror; Michal Aviad's "Did you ever Shoot at Anyone?"; "Baba Luba" by Julie Shelz; "119 Bullets plus Three" by Ye'oud Levanon; and Erez Laufer's "Edinburgh is not Waiting for Me."


Israeli Projects on the Information Highway

The Israeli Ministry of Science has created a Conferencing Page for its Israeli Projects in the Information Super Highway. The page provide links to the projects presently supported by the Ministry of Science following the policy established by the National Committee for Information Technologies Infrastructures, headed by Prof. Danny Dolev.

An additional Hebrew conferencing system, developed by Dr. Sheizaf Rafaeli of Hebrew University, has been included at the site. Electronic visitors are invited to review the projects and procvide feedback via the experimental implementation of this and the other conferencing systems at the site.

Multi-user CD-ROM Drive

Israeli software company Ornetix has teamed up with Smart & Friendly, a leading US hardware manufacturer in the CD-ROM field. Ornetix produces LAN software for CD-ROM drive management, enabling multi-users in a network to access drives simultaneously. Ornetix is a subsidiary of elroNet, a division of multinational high-tech holding company Elron of Haifa.


Optical Discs Used to Store Data in Computers

A new system for using optical discs in data banks of computers has been devised by Dr. Erez Hassman, and Professor Asher Prizam of the Physics Department at the Weizmann Institute of Research. An international patent has been registered. Existing optical discs for data-saving can retain 650-million "bits" (or letters) but future computer systems will need larger memories. The solution is to create a stack of discs of several levels, and the Israeli team overcame the technical difficulties in moving from level to level by using different laser beams of different wavelengths.


Intel (Israel) Exports Reach $479 Million in 1996

Intel (Israel)'s exports reached $479 million in 1996, an increase of approximately 30% over the firm's exports from Israel in 1995, according to Intel's Israel management. Management reports that Intel Electronics, located in Jerusalem, exported $363 million while Intel's Design Center in Haifa had exports of $116 million.
